Opinion: And just like that, Steve Bannon’s out at the White House

Well, there’s at least one thing Donald Trump brought from the private sector to government: The firings come on Fridays. From my news-side colleagues:

“Almost exactly one year after Steve Bannon left his position as executive chair of the conservative website Breitbart News in favor of joining Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign, the 63-year-old is leaving the White House.

“The White House confirmed in a statement that Friday would be Bannon’s last day as part of the administration.”

The details — did Bannon quit or was he fired? — and the potential implications — will he and Breitbart News now go after Trump, or just other members of his senior staff? — are still shaking out. But this is yet another seismic shift in the Trump White House, following the departures of Sean Spicer and Reince Priebus (both announced by the White House on Fridays), as well as Michael Flynn, Anthony Scaramucci and others. All for a presidency not quite 7 months old.

In terms of the direction of this administration, as opposed to its operations, this could be the biggest departure yet. Bannon’s role was chief strategist, and it is hard to describe the administration’s strategy so far as a success. Regarding policy, this White House has too often been adrift. Perhaps Bannon’s replacement can help shift the president’s focus away from campaign-style rhetoric and toward notching some legislative accomplishments.

Again, it’s a bit too early to say. But one thing is clear: Trump is running out of people in his inner circle to fire. The man who went to Washington to turn things upside-down has seen far more turnover inside the White House than outside it. If that doesn’t change soon, he won’t have too many others left to blame …

Great job this evening by Trump of reading a speech that somebody else wrote.

A toast........to mayhem in the streets of Phoenix tomorrow night!

The stupids can't explain why they're so far behind the Republicans in fund raising. The Democrats have no message for America. They're losers.

Great speech by the president.

@SGTGrit  Platitudes. All this "respect" for the troops from a draft dodger. No plan. Some threats as usual.

@SGTGrit  I listened to it again. No specifics. Once again we're getting our people killed by an enemy who far surpass our allies in courage and commitment. A Vietnam rerun.

@Starik @SGTGrit  He specifically said he wasn't going to give specifics.  No giving the enemy our game plan, unlike the "genius" who preceded him.

Today US Senator Susan Collins, R-Maine, said she is "not sure" Trump will be the republican party presidential candidate in 2020.

I'm sure. I've said this many times and will no doubt say it again many times: Donald Trump will not be the republican candidate for president in 2020.

So Trump watched the eclipse without glasses... Typical Trump; the rules of science regarding eye damage don't apply to him; he has the best eyes... Hope the wife & kid were smart enough not to look.

I see that the Embarrassment-In-Chief will be giving a speech on Afghanistan strategy this evening. Perhaps he'll discuss the fact that about two-thirds of voters in Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania - all states that he won last November - consider him a national embarrassment.

@breckenridge  One thing is a certain. He will spout the opposite of something his base thinks he has promised. Because he can't do 99% of what he has promised and still get any approval to do it.

His acolytes will lap the speech up. The rest of us know he is just trying to divert attention from his monumental ineptitude and scumbaggery.

@breckenridge Well, the blog god does not like p e c k e r without the spaces.

As I tried to post, you people's memory is as short as your p e c k e r.

Barry's numbers were only about 2 points above Trump's real clear average at this time in his presidency.

Trump needs people in the White House loyal to him, not to an ideology or just to themselves. More leaks in 7 months out of this WH than the 16 years of Bush & Obama.  There are another half dozen or so Trump needs to clean out.

@Caius

What I don't understand is why its taking so long to do it?

Sessions has Justice investigating, but that does not excuse why Trump has not gone through the staff like poop through a goose until the place is clean.

There are no worries in finding others to blame. The media has and will always be the scapegoat for Trump.

It difficult to determine the implications from Bannon going back to breitbart. But sure sounds like he will have senior staff in his cross-hairs.

He lost the tug of war between him and the Trump kids. Now he will strike using his most full tool. Mindless mass media hysteria and half truths.

@McGarnagle

One report I read had it that the departure was in the works for weeks and was supposed to be something like "I, Steven Goebbels Goering Bannon, decided it was time to retire from my position."  But then the President Lyingscumbag went all nazi, Bannon wouldn't leave, and he was chitcanned.

I don't disagree with you that Bannon will be out for revenge but I still think that he and President Lyingscumbag are butt buddies (figuratively speaking, of course) and will continue to be in cahoots with each other.

Yes. Bannon and Trump are still allies. Bannon just views the folks around Trump as the enemy of the state. Ryan and McConnell better put on their helmets because they are going to get hit hard.

It’s already starting to happen. The howling manchild who occupies the Oval Office is being cut off and contained."

Well said.

Breitbart went after Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump today.

And so the mental midget morons, who haven't had an original thought in decades, will be changing their tune.  They were big supporters of both Jared and Ivanka for months. But now, because the mental midget morons are incapable of thinking for themselves, they'll start referring to the two as democrats.  Because Breitbart told them to do so.

So now the looney party believes POTUS laundered money for Russian mobsters?

I said, based on the expertise of those hired by Robert Mueller, that his team is likely looking at money laundering by Trump for Russian mobsters. I don't believe he did such a thing, nor do I disbelieve he did.

I did not say this is the belief of any party. You are lying, and you know you're lying.

trump has shown himself to be exactly what most of us thought he was, a lazy, ignorant, blowhard liar with zero substance. he has somehow conned his way in to this job and has no idea what to do and is too lazy to learn anything. his empty campaign rhetoric does him no good when there's actual work to be done.  he is clueless and all the campaign-style rallies aren't going to change anything. i hope they do find some money laundering or ways to prove collusion (which obviously happened), that way we can get him out of that place and move his fat arse back to the penthouse where he can continue to watch TV all day until his next round of golf and/or ribbon cutting ceremony. he is useless to us...
