No, Mitt Romney isn’t a sellout for considering a Trump cabinet post

I have no idea if Donald Trump will pick Mitt Romney to be his secretary of state. Maybe he will. Or maybe Trump is stringing him along to set up a publicly humiliating rejection as payback for Romney’s many past criticisms of the man who is now the president-elect. Who knows?

What I do know is those past criticisms don’t mean Romney has now sold his soul or committed a brazen reversal to even consider serving in the Trump administration. They certainly aren’t reason enough for him to turn down the job if Trump offers it.

One thing we hear people of all political stripes bemoan is the “lack of statesmanship” today. Well, what else is statesmanship but a willingness to put aside partisan or personal differences to do what’s best for the country?

Romney is clearly qualified for the office, and he would bring a softer touch to what will surely be hard-edged rhetoric on all topics, including foreign policy, from the new administration. I have to imagine folks in foreign capitals would be somewhat relieved to have Romney as a point of contact with the White House, compared to some of the other possibilities. What’s more, as Trump doesn’t appear to have hard and fast beliefs about very many topics, it may be that Romney could help shape, or at least smooth, the new president’s views on some important issues. Anyone who disagrees with Trump would have to see that as an opportunity worth seizing.

I’m not saying he’s the only or best choice, just that he would be a good one. And that, knowing he would be a good choice for a crucial job, he had an obligation to consider it when approached.

Now, all this changes if Trump and Romney find themselves irreconcilably opposed on too many foreign-policy topics. The president needs someone who will represent him and his views well and accurately, and any secretary of state would have to be both confident in and comfortable with those views. If Romney can’t — and you have to admit, for example, there’s some space between Trump’s comments about Russia and Romney’s declaration four years ago, underscored by events since then, that Moscow is America’s No. 1 geopolitical foe — he shouldn’t even be offered the job, much less accept it. In that case the country would be better served by having Romney offering honest critiques of Trump’s foreign policy from the right.

But the fact Romney is listening doesn’t mean he’s lost his principles. It means he’s honoring the most important of all: country first.

Active Austrians in the Nazi regime[edit]

Besides Hitler, the following Austrians were among those playing an active part in the Nazi regime:

Some things never change.

So you're saying you only hate right wing fascists if their lineage is Austrian?

I'm simply pointing out the hypocrisy of those who would do away with Obamacare but not Medicare.  The filthy old disgusting south hick racist garbage that pass themselves off as conservatives.

I suspect that North Dakota Democrat Senator Heidi Heitkamp would have a hard time turning down Secretary of Energy, as her state is one of the primary beneficiaries of the policies Trump will implement. She barely won office in 2012, and since then North Dakota’s oil boom seems to have added GOP voters.  Trump won North Dakota with 62.96% of the vote, and Republican Senator John Hoeven – who defeated Heitkamp when both ran for governor -- got 78.48% of the vote.

Presiding over a boom in her home state has got to be attractive to her.

A special election would be required in thirty days, and there is no Democrat on the scene who could win.

Just more downward spiraling for the Democratic Party.

If I hear the media's comparisons and reference to Lincolns "Team of Rivals" again I will puke. Trump is more familiar with Hitlers speeches than with Lincoln, just ask his first wife.  It was also LBJ who said he would rather have a rival pissing  out of the tent than pissing into it, that is Trump's mindset.  He has already silenced Romney by having him jump thru hoops, so I don't expect him to be chosen or to offer any future complaints.

latest plan for Obama care- Let Trump enterprises  take over the insurance business with unlimited tax credits for him and his family; no caps on profits and then rename it Trumpcare after removing all limits on profits and pricing.

I think our first hurdle would be actually defeating them -

The American military, along with its international partners, will need to remain in Iraq even after the expected defeat of the Islamic State group, outgoing Defense Secretary Ash Carter said Saturday.

"But there will still be much more to do after that to make sure that, once defeated, ISIL stays defeated," he said, using an alternative acronym for ISIS. "We'll need to continue to counter foreign fighters trying to escape and ISIL's attempts to relocate or reinvent itself. To do so, not only the United States but our coalition must endure and remain engaged militarily."

Hey, that's^^ the George W Bush plan.

Only took obozo 8 years to figure it out.

@IReportYouWhine Mad man Flynn will be in charge as national security adviser. He has big plans for all Muslims in US. Thinks Russia is our ally and enemy is Iran as promoter of radical terrorism- not Saudis. Even claimed Iran behind Benghazi with no intelligence to back it up. And this guy was in charge of Defense intelligence. Hates CIA- he is Trump's top security adviser with no congressional oversight.

Looks like Jill Stein has run out of cash. CBS’ Pittsburgh affiliate reports that the Green Party can’t raise the $1 million bond for the Pennsylvania recount, and has withdrawn their demand. And with that, the election is well and truly over.

That ends the campaign. Without taking Pennsylvania off the Electoral College table, Trump can’t lose. Even if Stein manages to force the electors from Wisconsin and Michigan to miss the safe-harbor deadline and the Electoral College on December 19th by tying up both states in useless recounting, Trump still has 280 electors and a clear victory.

Even with that, though, Wisconsin looks like it’s well on its way to finishing its recount on time. Its Day 3 results show that almost a third of Wisconsin precincts have completed their recounts, accounting for over 705,000 of the 2.975 million ballots cast in the presidential race. The net change has been to find 349 additional votes. Trump has gained 138 votes and Hillary Clinton 126, which means that Trump has extended his lead by 12 points. That’s, er, not exactly what Stein promised donors who coughed up millions for this stupid and futile gesture.

More popcorn, please!

Look at this, the liberals are getting lectured by the Chinese -

After criticism about Donald Trump talking with Taiwan’s leader jeopardizing U.S.-China relations, Beijing and a former American ambassador suggested Saturday that Americans have perhaps overacted and the president-elect willingness to talk with isolated world leaders doesn’t signal a dangerous foreign policy shift.

Over reacting is their way of life, dude.

AndyManUSA#45
AndyManUSA#45

Remember, this all started over a phone call -

(CNN)Despite strong opposition from China, the Obama administration authorized a $1.83 billion weapons sale to Taiwan Wednesday, marking the first U.S. arms shipment to the island in four years.

"Our longstanding policy on arms sales to Taiwan has been consistent across six different U.S. administrations," he added. "We believe our consistent policy has contributed to the security of Taiwan, and has also supported the maintenance of peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait."

Like I said earlier, the dog that attacks every car that drives by it's house.

AndyManUSA#45
AndyManUSA#45

But since coming to office this year, Tsai has refused to accept the "One China" concept, prompting Beijing to cut off all official communication with the island's new government.

Tsai's Democratic Progressive Party government (DPP) defeated the Kuomintang (KMT), which had much friendlier ties with Beijing, in a landslide election victory in January.

Yep, the independent people of Taiwan want Freedom, voted for Freedom and the liberals deny them Freedom.

And get enraged at anyone suggesting their Freedom.

Any questions?

@Starik @IReportYouWhine You are the only one talking about war. Apparently, pleasant phone conversations isn't one of the Chinese red lines.

And my military service has been well documented here. I do not intend to revisit it every time one of you liberals wets the bed. I put my DD-214 up on the internets for all to see, unlike some around here that claim to be war heroes.

The U.S. trade deficit with China was $365.7 billion in 2015  This is a new record, up slightly from last year's record of $343 billion.

The trade deficit exists because U.S. exports to China were only $116.2 billion while imports from China hit a new record of $481.9 billion. The deficit keeps growing because imports are rising faster than exports.

Gosh, I wonder who holds the upper hand in this deal?

The United States imports consumer electronics, clothing, and machinery from China.

Better known as Chinese junk.

Sometimes if you just want to kill a little bit of time get yourself some popcorn and peek into the Bookman blog. You'll see honested and some of the other libs who haven't a clue as to how and why Hillary Clinton, lost the election to Donald Trump. Their posts are a hoot to read. To the credit of some of the libs over there they acknowledge that Hillary, was just a poor candidate. Of course while Hillary, being a poor candidate is true there's much more to the Dems loss than just that.

Starik
Starik

@SGTGrit @Starik We do differ politically, but I look forward to debating you on the blogs. And even agreeing with you.

Starik

@SGTGrit You're right; Hillary was a poor candidate. Trump could have been beaten, easily, by a decent Democrat.

SGTGrit
SGTGrit

@Starik @SGTGrit

The Democrats must delve into some intense introspection. The electorate isn't buying what the old line is selling. We need to get back to a two party system but the Democrats don't appear to grasp what that will take.

Starik
Starik

@SGTGrit @Starik Right again. The Dems anointed Hillary as the 2016 candidate as soon as Obama was elected. The GOP establishment tried to set up Jeb the same way.

SGTGrit
SGTGrit

@Starik @SGTGrit

We differ somewhat politically but I respect you and believe we have more common ground based on life experience. Trump, won because he tapped into American frustration. The Democrats don't need to be Trump, but they must understand that accusing people of being homophobic, racists, xonophobic, or some other phobic just won't win elections anymore. I'm an evangelical but most who I know don't dwell on social bias anymore that went away sometime ago because we're all sinners. We need to get back to being Americans.
