The Hillary Clinton illness that apparently can’t be cured

"Remain calm! All is well!" Hillary misleads her way through another unwanted problem. (Eric Thayer / The New York Times)

“Remain calm! All is well!” Hillary misleads her way through another unwanted problem. (Eric Thayer / The New York Times)

People get sick. People get too hot while being in the outdoors during the summer. Sometimes people feel unwell but think it’s nothing serious, only to find out later it was worse than they thought.

What do people usually not do? Get diagnosed with a real, possibly communicable illness; defy doctors’ orders to slow down and instead spend time among large crowds; feel ill, and then have other people tell a lie about what was going on.

In case you thought Hillary Clinton was ever capable of simply telling the truth: Apparently, she isn’t.

There have been occasional reports from the campaign trail about Clinton’s health: most recently, about a coughing fit she tried to fight off during a speech in Cleveland last Monday. Aides attributed that incident — which was reported by more than the alt-right websites of the world — to allergies. And maybe, at that point, that’s what the Clinton team really thought was to blame.

But by Friday, we now know, her personal physician had diagnosed her with pneumonia and prescribed antibiotics and rest. That was before Sunday, when she felt ill at an event commemorating the 9/11 attacks and had to be helped to a van while leaving early. And yet, when asked about her departure, campaign aides Sunday chalked up her condition to being “overheated.” Not, you know, to having pneumonia.

What Clinton is truly allergic to, it seems, are transparency and honesty. Or as one prominent Democrat put it:

Candidates’ bodies can certainly break down over the course of long, grueling campaigns. There’s no shame in taking time off to recuperate, even if it means missing a high-profile event.

But it absolutely is shameful that the Clinton team’s default settings are: deny, obfuscate, mislead. Although voters have every right to know about the health of their presidential candidates — and some of the same people shamelessly spinning for Clinton today were criticizing Donald Trump not very long ago for not being sufficiently forthcoming about his own health — it’s unlikely they would vote against Clinton because she got sick for a few days in September.

But they might hold it against her that, once again, Clinton and her team tried to lie their way through a situation rather than admitting to any kind of mistake or weakness.

The hack of Colin Powell's server is providing some pretty damaging comments by Democratic supporters about Hillary as well as about her health.

@lvg Someone counted the number of times he referred to himself (137 or so).  So, is he running again or is Hillary the candidate?

The democrats tripled the national debt during the ten years they were in power and now they squeal like pigs about increased government spending. Does anyone else sense a little bit of insincerity like I do?

Maybe because it is money going to the middle class instead of money going into accounts that they can use to funnel it to family members? Now, I understand.

The deplorables are the NE liberal elitists that think that anyone who doesn't think and act like they do are somehow flawed lesser individuals. According to the dictionary, this is the definition of a bigot.

Intelligence, reason, logic, culture, and thought are not limited to one party or the Boston-Washington corridor.  Obama did the same thing as Hillary, to establish his liberal elitist credentials in 2008, when he said the poor folks in the rural areas cling to their guns, bible, and their religion.  It is always the same with all these self proclaimed elitists, they seem to feel that they need to separate themselves from the common folks.

Hillary allowed us to see what she really thinks of people who live in what she calls fly over country.  She says their views and opinions are inferior and they should be segregated from elitist folks like her.

Orange Clown getting desperate - Promising the low voltage voters that he will give them billions for child care, maternity leave , school choice and expanded IRS give away money (EITC) for the working poor. I guess he is promising to pay for these goodies without consent of Congress.Deficits will no longer matter as always when Orange Clown elected.Congress will pass it overnight.

"Something special like country hasn't seen in decades" says the Clown.

No Orange Clown-it was just eight years ago when we saw how trickle down and GOP largesse  gave us the greatest economic debacle in our lifetime.

Mr. Wingfield and others,

In my former business (self-owned), I was short of breath, weak, and with mild coughing for weeks. I never told anyone because I felt responsible for my employees and customers, and I did not FEEL ill. Only when I fainted in my shop and was alert with my assistant driving me to an ER did I realize I'd made a big mistake. My diagnosis was walking pneumonia, and the cure was antibiotics and 3 days bed rest with no phone and no beeper (no cell phone then in the early 90s). Others now refer to my choice as "powering through." I can easily understand that the combination of an infection, bacterial or virus, with heat, thick clothing to cover what probably is some body protection, and a heavy schedule of campaigning and fund-raising, requires powering through. MSec Clinton is one tough woman, and I admire her strength and intelligence. Has anyone made headlines of the fact that Chuck Schumer recently worked weeks with walking pneumonia? Have headlines been seen about Donald Trump's medical letter from his doctor written in 5 minutes while the doctor was in his limousine about to leave? Thanks for reading my comments.

Oh My what a wonderful testimony. Problem is you evidently went home and followed your doctors orders, where Hillary, did not and subjected numerous people to pneumonia including her grandchild for selfish motive.

Given that it's just a touch of pneumonia, we should see her back real soon, right? This picture of perfect health should be able to just shrug it off, uh huh.

Hillary Clinton made a politically foolish generalization with her “basket of deplorables” comment about half of Trumps’ supporters. She may be quite right, because many of those people she mentioned do support Trump’s deplorable, openly expressed views. Are they 50% of all Trump’s supporters? Who knows, but we know from the polls than a very large percentage of the Republicans express very deplorable views.

But the great irony and hypocrisy is that this kind of generalization is criticized here and still routinely used by those  same people when they make comments on the political opposition. How many times have we heard the generalizations about “what the libs think and do?”

@MarkVV What MSec Clinton said was, "You know, to just be grossly generalistic, you could put half of Trump's supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables. Right? [Laughter/applause]. The racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamophobic — you name it. And unfortunately there are people like that. And he has lifted them up. He has given voice to their websites that used to only have 11,000 people, now have 11 million. He tweets and retweets offensive, hateful, mean-spirited rhetoric. Now some of those folks, they are irredeemable, but thankfully they are not America" (http://www.npr.org/2016/09/10/493427601/hillary-clintons-basket-of-deplorables-in-full-context-of-this-ugly-campaign).

And are Mr. Trump's repeated, fact-checked lies headline news?

@MarkVV A deplorable is someone who lies about Orange Clown donating millions to charity when he is stealing it from others to buy himself a portrait  of himself and now has to face a criminal investigation of  his phony foundation through NY attorney general.

Clintons show over 15 million in charities in last ten years on their taxes. Orange Clown- maybe $10,000.

Who is the liar here? Trump; Pence; Kelly Anne??

@SGTGrit @MarkVV I do not know if you are really such a naïve simpleton, so that you are unable to comprehend such a simple thing, but I will try to explain. I am going to type very slowly, to help you follow.

I have criticized Hillary for “a politically foolish generalization.” You understand the word “politically,” don’t you? It is not a good campaign politics to attack voters, even those on the other side, rather than the opponent, especially if you try to get a few of their votes after all. And it is foolish to make a specific charge about “half” of the supporters without evidence, even if you believe that it might be right.

But that is in no contradiction with the view that what she said may be true. As matter of fact, people more familiar with polls have made that point elsewhere. As I wrote, we do not know if it is 50%, but polls have shown that many Republicans hold views that are “deplorable,” such as that Obama is a Muslim, that he is not American, that many immigrants are terrorists, that black people are lazy or stupid, that illegal immigrants are mostly criminals (“SOME are good people,” according to Trump), etc. And those appear to be at least part of the base of Trump supporters.

She should be praised, not criticized. She thought she could work through it because she usually does. I don't think, Mr. Winfield that she deliberately deceived anyone, as you imply. She's a woman and a mother and we have become accustomed to working while we're sick, apparently something you know nothing about.

looks like all of the democratic minions have learned to say "deplorable" as their new word.  it's a great example of DNC's party line merging with truthspeak.

And that's where you show the "sizable" qualifier earlier -- like Hillary's multiple attempts at qualifying the label -- was disingenuous. Go on and say it: You think anyone who would vote for a Republican is the same as David Duke.

At her ripe old age of 70, she is trying to become our president. Talk about "mind is willing, but body says NO"Is this the best America can come up with? Between a very unreliable and non trustworthy woman and a clown with a huge ego, I will sit this one out.

It took me two weeks to recover from pneumonia and I had the real deal. 65% of my lungs were filled with fluid. The single payer health care system of the US Army had sent me home with an aspirin a few nights prior to my check in to the hospital, I guess they were trying to kill me to reduce their costs. But whatever, we should expect to see hillary back into grind of the campaign and debates real soon, eh?

Have you ever had pneumonia? I have. And you think you are better (not cured...better) and you run out of gas like falling off a cliff.

Kyle , you expect her to just stop running when her mind is still racing? Get real. Have you ever tried to sit still....completely still...when you have work to do?

Doctors tell you to stay home and get over a sickness, but most Americans have jobs to do. Must be nice to sit behind a keyboard and type so strenuously from your desk at home!

The most telling and saddest of all I think is at 11:15 of the video.  Watch it a few times.  While her vacant stare is chilling enough on its own, what is most alarming I think is the mild panic on the face of the burly security guard who tries to comfort her and bring her back to the present.  It is clear that he has seen this before and knows what to do, like one who knows how to handle a loved one suffering from dementia or some other chronic mental condition.  If you have ever experienced this with a loved one, I am sure you will be able to relate.
It is hard to know how far her condition has progressed or how much it is affecting her daily functioning or whether it has gotten to the point that she could not function at a level necessary to be President, but she is obviously not well neurologically.  I also would be worried that the stress and strain of the campaign will worsen her condition.
