Auditors: How was Hillary’s email use wrong? Let us count the ways

(AP Photo / Richard Shiro)

Well, well, well … from the Associated Press:

“Hillary Clinton and her team ignored clear guidance from the State Department that her email setup broke federal standards and could leave sensitive material vulnerable to hackers, an independent audit has found. Her aides twice brushed aside concerns, in one case telling technical staff ‘the matter was not to be discussed further.’

“The inspector general’s review also revealed that hacking attempts forced then-Secretary of State Clinton off email at one point in 2011, though she insists the personal server she used was never breached. Clinton and several of her senior staff declined to be interviewed for the State Department investigation.

“Earlier this month, Clinton declared that she was happy to ‘talk to anybody, anytime’ about the matter and would encourage her staff to do the same. …

“The 78-page analysis, a copy of which was obtained by The Associated Press, says Clinton ignored clear directives. She never sought approval to conduct government business over private email, and never demonstrated the server or the Blackberry she used while in office ‘met minimum information security requirements.’

“Twice in 2010, information management staff at the State Department raised concerns that Clinton’s email practices failed to meet federal records-keeping requirements. The staff’s director responded that Clinton’s personal email system had been reviewed and approved by legal staff, ‘and that the matter was not to be discussed any further.’

“The audit found no evidence of a legal staff review or approval. It said any such request would have been denied by senior information officers because of security risks.”

This should surprise approximately no one who hasn’t spent the past 14 months, since the story about Clinton’s private email server first broke, pretending this was a non-issue, just another instance of the “vast right-wing conspiracy” ganging up on poor, little Ms. Hillary.

Naturally, the Clinton campaign is trying to spin the report as confirming that previous secretaries of state also used private email accounts. This is quintessentially Clintonian misdirection; the AP story explains why:

“The audit did note that former Secretary of State Colin Powell had also exclusively used a private email account, though it did not name any other prior secretaries who had done so. But the failings of Clinton were singled out in the audit as being more serious than her predecessor.

“‘By Secretary Clinton’s tenure, the department’s guidance was considerably more detailed and more sophisticated,’ the report concluded. ‘Secretary Clinton’s cybersecurity practices accordingly must be evaluated in light of these more comprehensive directives.'”

That, and the fact none of her predecessors took it upon themselves to set up a unsecured, homebrew server in their own basement while in office.

I still doubt the Obama Justice Department will prosecute Clinton over the separate but related matter of her having classified information on that server of hers. But I do wonder if that will be in spite of an FBI recommendation to prosecute, which would surely be a death blow to her campaign. That would play right into the hands of Donald Trump — and, if Democrats haven’t formally nominated her, Bernie Sanders — that “the system” is rigged, and powerful people with connections such as the Clintons are the beneficiaries. In the contest of which candidate is least bad, a recommended prosecution for a potential commander-in-chief who in her previous job put national security at risk would be pretty hard to top.

I guess this one's the funniest of the comments, from someone who seems to think that dirt gets to vote.

"the vast majority of counties in NY voted against her but she won the few with the biggest populations so she won the election.guess you could say it was smart politics but other than NYC most of the state did not want her. "

Hillary is a corrupt liar--that's not really in dispute.

Democrats don't care--they have nowhere else to go unless she's indicted.

Fact.

She won't be indicted and that is the end of that conversation folks.

@Lil_Barry_Bailout Funny how members of Stupid Party get lied to every day by Herr Trump and they could care less.

Kenn Starr, the guy who vigorously investigated the President's sex life

Somehow looked the other way at Baylor

Karma is a ........

Starr's near-silence around sexual assault and Baylor athletics stands in marked, almost hilariously hypocritical, contrast to the constant leaking of grand jury information when he was the independent counsel investigating President Clinton's irresponsible dalliance with an intern. Starr's report led to a failed impeachment proceeding, which concluded with no indictment and a cost to taxpayers of over $70 million.

Like every Clinton "scandal" before

There just isnt any there there.

RW media gets the rubes all riled up. But when it comes time to deliver the goods the "scandals" always fall flat.

Add this one to the list

Whitewater

Filegate

Vince Foster

Benghazi

Emailgate.......

Don't worry guys. Soon Hillary will be President and Fox News will have lots of "scandals" to sell you.

Like most Clinton scandals, if there there hadn't been months, maybe more than a year of weird conspiracy theories, expected perp walks and general nonsense, one might read this and say, wow, that's disappointing. But after all that, it's just a big nothingburger. Like it almost always is.

As a Democrat, people need to acknowledge that she broke the law and I would be in jail already for doing the same thing.  I also hate Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump, because both would (likely) be disastrous for America.

At this point, I'm sure the majority of Democrats and (rational) Republicans wish we could just keep Obama. At least we know what he is going to do and things will remain stable.

@JFMcNamara

Obama is doing as much damage to the economy, the Constitution, and our liberties as Hillary or Trump would, so your assuredness is misplaced.

A nothing burger.

Just like the hoax PP videos this too fell flat.

the report says the issues with the management of the Secretary of State's emails are of longstanding and go back with the last five Secretaries of State. The report also singles out Colin Powell, who had a similar set up.

Guess what guys. Hillary didn't kill Vince Foster either. And yes we really did land on the moon.

@ScubaSteve @Hedley_Lammar  I'm with you. How we handle digital security in the modern age is an important question. Its a discussion we should be having.

But instead this become a political witch hunt. Nobody would give a damn about Hillary's emails just like nobody cared about Powell's if she werent running for President.

Its a nothing burger in this regards. It wont effect the election this fall at all.

JohnnyReb

@Hedley_Lammar @ScubaSteve The Hillary camp was told point blank what they were doing was not procedure.

They specifically ignored the warnings and sent the word down not to speak of it again.

They knew exactly what they were doing was wrong and chose to continue.

After all, it was a "Clinton."

How do you guys breath with your head so far down in the sand?

Hedley_Lammar
Hedley_Lammar

@JohnnyReb @Hedley_Lammar @ScubaSteve After all, it was a "Clinton."

And that is why this matters to Republicans.

If after all it was a "Powell"

We wouldn't be having this discussion

Even Republicans aren't stupid enough to not see the hypocrisy in all this.

@Hedley_Lammar  You should go back and read the State Dept Audit Report Heddie:         “Secretary Clinton should have preserved any Federal records she created and received on her personal account by printing and filing those records with the related files in the Office of the Secretary. At a minimum, Secretary Clinton should have surrendered all emails dealing with Department business before leaving government service and, because she did not do so, she did not comply with the Department’s policies that were implemented in accordance with the Federal Records Act.”      She is an incompetent liar,  just like her husband and Your Hussain Obama.

@Hedley_Lammar Try as I might, I can't call this a nothing-burger. A very little burger, but not nothing.

Not like "you're a criminal for mismanaging these complex digital rules" but moreso "Damn I'm disappointed someone on your team didn't pay more attention to this."

Libbies are correct.

Trump is not perfect.

But he is more so than Hillary.

Plus, he is the only candidate on the Right who will stand up to Hillary and the Left and give them back more than they dish out.

Trump is a God Send.

I'm sick and tired of the Republicans believing that "some day" those on the Left will see the error of their ways and switch to the right.

If they will just be good guys it will happen.

Well, it hasn't happened and the Libs are taking us down the toilet.

Give'em Hell Donald!

@Jefferson1776 @JohnnyReb Would  wager Trump's IQ is exceedingly greater than yours, and you sycophant  liberals and you should not be abusing and misusing a founder's signet.  Trump will expose Hillary's lying incompetence,  in many ways. l

To Clinton's true believers she can do not wrong.

To Trump's true believers he can do no wrong.

The election will be decided by those who are not true believers,

and for reasons like wallets and other very personal issues.  As always the ladies among us will decide who will be the next president.

Yes, the election will be decided by those who aren't true believers.

And both possible answers to the question of who should be our next President are wrong.

Yawn...windmill...full tilt ahead.

Meanwhile as the Republican apparatus continues to gnash teeth over any trivial nonevent that can be associated with Clinton Donald Trump runs amok as the new "Face of the Repug Nation".

Interesting priorities to say the least.

It's amazing how Libs are still sticking to the line that Hillary did not break any laws with her private email server.

The IG states she broke the rules.

The rules are based on the law.

Therefore she broke the law.

And I suppose the Libs see no connection between Hillary having the Ambassador's schedule on her server and terrorists attacking when he was at Benghazi?

I know, I know, it was the 9/11 anniversary.  You Libbies stick to that if it makes you feel better.

You probably still think her server was not hacked even though the FBI has a made a deal with the hacker they have in custody on lesser concerns so that he will testify in the future.

Ok soso I agree  both Trump and Hillary are inveterate liars, and   egomaniacs with a lot of smelly baggage. So who does that leave us for a qualified candidate for President? Bernie?

Rules have changed due to more security concerns....she was taught the rules.

Actually it was more of a condemnation of the State Department than it is of Hillary Clinton. This is a nonissue as it has been said while they want to say it was wrong these "rules" were codified until she left office. #MoveOn #HillYes #ImWithHer

People routinely are rejected from practicing law for less.

Shelton Brown Jr

When and where? This is clearly a matter of perspective as she has actually complied with request and General Powell has thus far ignored them. You have to have committed a crime and acted unethically to get disbarred and it is a steep hill to climb to get it done.

whudsonga

Article fails to mention US law and State Department policy allowed Clinton to use her own personal e-mail account.  So what the issue?  She did not break law so this is why Republicans continuous investigation cannot find any laws broken...So now the Republicans have to dig through thousands of e-mails to try to possible find a smoking gun.

Hillary's wrong doings are ALWAYS played up in the media! What about Powell, Rice, and Kerry? What about the Sanders? For some reason, they seem to get a pass re vetting! For so long, Trump got free positive publicity just by calling in or tweeting! Many of his nagatives are not aired like those of Hillary'! What we are forgetting is that Hillary has been ACCUSED of MANY THINGS but she has NOT BEEN CHARGED OR FOUND GUILTY OF ANYTHING! In our country, one is INNOCENT until proven GUILTY! Be fair!

Must be nice to have sycophants and hangers on that think the facts are whatever you say they are.  She is almost like the Queen, in that, the law is what she says it is.

No matter how many times she corrects, edits, obfuscates, spins, rationalizes, and changes her story, the Hillarybots defend the latest version, admitting that the old version was wrong, but this version is definitely right, at least until she changes it again.

This IG report disproves most of what she alleged happened in her early stories.  How she wanted to only use one device for convenience, when we have an email now that shows she told Huma she didn't want her emails accessible.  Even if you think she was justified in what she did or she didn't know any better, you have to admit she has lied throughout the ordeal.

So how low do her "honest and trustworthy" numbers go now.  Probably not any lower, because as I said above, some of the Hillarybots wouldn't question her honesty if she would revise history and come out and say "Bill never cheated on me".

Public service announcement:

Remember Jane Mayer, the outstanding journalist and author who exposed the machinations behind the 35 year stealthy political goings-on of the Koch Brothers in "The New Yorker," about 4 years ago?

She now has a book out entitled "Dark Money."  This book spreads light on how the 1% have used secretive political ends, in deep and wide ways, to control their financial interests in America, at the expense of the rest of us.  I plan to read it, and I hope that you will, also.

Jefferson, it is time for you to outshine Hamilton, in our nation's ongoing history.
