Video: Bookman and Wingfield on Medicaid expansion in Georgia

Jay and I have done some videos together in the past, talking about elections and whatnot, and starting this week we’re going to be doing a regular feature where we pick a topic each week and present our respective takes on it. This initial video is on Medicaid expansion in Georgia.

(If the embedded video doesn’t work for you, click here to watch it.)

This is our first effort — and there was no dress rehearsal — but I think it came together well. I can speak for both of us in saying we hope this will be something y’all look forward to each week.

Very well done- Kudos. US  special forces just killed no. 2 ISIS leader in Syria. GOP candidates in Athens probably going to blame Obama for not getting no. 1.

You both may become the Siskel and Ebert of political issues, as they were with movies.  ;-)

I think it was perfect the way it was, Kyle.  Both of you did an excellent job.  Both of your sentences were succinctly stated, and you both looked directly into the camera with conviction.  I liked the way that the music was present in the background throughout (good selection, too, with plenty of energy and appropriate gravitas).  I liked the cuts in editing from your upper torso and face to Bookman's, and back again, with scenes of other people and other places shown between the camera's rotating focus on both of you, while you both continued to make your points.

Good script. Good points. Well presented.  Just the right time for the video clip to end.  And, don't do what one person suggested to have more of a "blood bath."  How silly.  Doing that would demean you both and would demerit the credibility of this fine broadcast.

Keep up the good work, weekly.

Well done and both of you make good points. I just worry if Deal gets his hands on Medicaid money it won't go to Medicaid but to his buddies in some way. He didn't get out of his fiscal straights when he came to office by not skimming somewhere. If it goes directly to the hospitals at least it is not in his or the legislatures hand for sending elsewhere. Sorry, don't trust the good ol' boys around here.

Nice idea but you guys pulled too many punches.  Next time I want to see some blood drawn!

It is also helpful to compare two states with high uninsured rates that did or did not choose to setup exchanges and expand Medicaid.  Kentucky and Georgia give us two clear examples. The contrast between the two states could not be more dramatic. Kentucky’s uninsured rate in 2013 was at 20.4 % and has fallen to 9.8 %. A real improvement for sure but one made even more stark when comparing Kentucky to Georgia. Georgia has chosen not to setup an exchange nor participate in Medicaid expansion. As a result Georgia’s uninsured rate has only dropped to 19.1 % from its 2013 level of 21.4 %.

Kyle's description of this video is much more accurate than what was shown on the first page of ajc.com  (it described it as a debate).  Personally, I'd like to see a debate between the two of you.  It would surely need more than 3 minutes.

Great comments from both sides.  I was expecting more conversation and back and forth, but this is a leap forward in the what the AJC and both Kyle and Jay can do in the future for having good ideas from both sides presented.

The embed should be working now. If you have trouble with it, please use the link either in the post or in my comment below.

" Let's examine the long term impact. Seemed reasonable to me, but noooooooooooo."

Figmo, you really think they put a bill together and didn't look at the long term impacts as well as the short term impact? I don't think people are as stupid as you would like them to be.

Interesting, how Kyle is all for taking the federal money now but with greater flexibility, in place of the old conservative slogan “No Medicaid expansion for Georgia.” Where is the old argument that you cannot trust the federal government to deliver the funds in the future– will that disappear when you have “more flexibility?” The most embarrassing is Kyle’s last line about straight expansion being like telling a man with two broken arms “take two aspirins and see me in the morning,” which makes absolutely no sense.

That was short!

If I may critique, it would appear as though you, Kyle, along with Governor Deal, are asking for an opportunity to pre-plan in hopes that the unintended consequences to Georgia can be avoided.

Jay just wants to get 'er done regardless.

I can recall many Americans asking the Obama administration to slow down! Let's examine the long term impact.

Seemed reasonable to me, but noooooooooooo. It was HIS time.

@FIGMO2 "That was short!"

Actually, 3 minutes is pretty long in terms of what most people will sit through for these kinds of videos. But if we keep getting that critique, we might look into doing a longer version that goes on our blogs for you hard-core types :-)

@Kyle_Wingfield

Well, having hung around the AJC blogs for as long as I have, I've become accustomed to long drawn-out

battles, er.....debates.

Good job, Kyle! Cool, calm, and collected. That's the best way to proceed through life.

@FIGMO2 Slow down because they need time to pre-plan?  How long has this thing been around?  How much time do Republicans need to come up with an alternate plan?

I see this as a great idea, and was looking forward to listening. . . . and. . . .nope!

Guess I'll return tomorrow to see.  Hope to see more of these!

I've always thought this kind of exchange between the conservative and liberal columnists was a good idea.

BEST OF LUCK, KYLE, although I don't think you'll be needing luck, your logic will win the day.

Humor me just a bit, will you?

Bookman and Wingfield debate an issue?

BAN THE THOUGHT!

Couldn't resist.

And yes, I know the video isn't populating yet. This apparently has been a problem with our videos all day ... please be patient.
