On issue after issue, the Obama administration has gone Gruber

The Obama era is not yet over. But it’s safe to say the hallmark of America’s 44th presidency will not be Obamacare, deficits or foreign affairs. It will be the administration’s general, casual disregard for honesty, transparency and the rule of law.

IRS targeting; illegal recess appointments; rewriting the Clean Water Act to cover every rill and gully — and on and on.

Last week featured a series of late-surfacing videos in which Jonathan Gruber, an MIT professor and one of the architects of Obamacare, candidly described how officials snookered the public to pass the law.

The bill, Gruber said last year, “was written in a tortured way” to conceal its tax hikes, among other things. The administration abandoned this conceit in arguments before the Supreme Court, which upheld the law’s individual mandate as a tax increase.

“Lack of transparency is a huge political advantage,” Gruber concluded. “And basically, call it the stupidity of the American voter or whatever, but basically that was really, really critical to get (Obamacare) to pass.”

In another video from March 2010, just as Congress was giving final approval to Obamacare, Gruber said the repeated talk about “bending the cost curve downward” was just that: talk.

Although Americans like the premise of cutting costs, they like specific cuts less. “That’s why no one has a politically feasible way right now to bend the cost curve,” Gruber suggested, “it just doesn’t exist.”

So why were we told so often that Obamacare would cut costs anyway? “Barack Obama’s not a stupid man, OK?”

No, one supposes that would just be the voters who believed Obama. (Republicans and most independents have pointed out these falsehoods for years, so Gruber presumably was referring to Democrats.)

By Thursday, Democrats’ urge to distance themselves from Gruber was so great that former Speaker Nancy Pelosi said she didn’t “know who he is.” This, although in 2009 Pelosi more than once cited Gruber’s review of the bill.

You see, besides “help(ing) write the bill,” as Gruber has described his work, the good professor also wrote an “objective analysis” of it, as a White House blog post from November 2009 put it. For something or other, Gruber was paid almost $400,000.

Gruber was also recorded at least twice saying Obamacare subsidies were available only to consumers on state-based exchanges, not the federal exchange. He now disavows these statements as oral typos, or “speakos,” while the administration fights a legal challenge to federal-exchange subsidies.

He and Pelosi are not the only ones who have been Gruber-ing. Consider Obama’s reported plan to halt deportation proceedings for more than 5 million illegal immigrants by executive order.

Such an action would ignore that “the biggest problems that we’re facing right now have to do with … trying to bring more and more power into the executive branch and not go through Congress at all”; that there are “enough laws on the books by Congress that are very clear in terms of how we have to enforce our immigration system”; that having the president “bypass Congress and change” immigration law himself is “not how our system works … not how our democracy functions … not how our Constitution is written.”

Who said those things? None other than Barack Obama.

Even Obama's and the Democratic Party's Public Relations Department ( the lame stream media) will have a very tough time spinning Gruber's inexplicable impulse to reveal the truth and to "tell it all, brother"  about Obamacare.  Maybe they should just do like Pelosi and lie about knowing who he is.

Get used to seeing this guy, a lot, for the next two years. His videos are clearly the gift that will keep on giving, and he has even increased the danger Obamacare was already in due to the upcoming Supreme Court case, by making it crystal clear that the bill's language related to the formation of the state exchanges and subsidies was not a "typo" (as the not too bright political cartoonist for the AJC insinuated in a recent cartoon), but it was absolutely the intent of the Dems in order to punish the citizens of the states that did not create exchanges.

The bright side of Obama showing that he is piqued about the results of the election, and is now feeling feisty and combative, is that he will put the 2016 coronation of Hillary (or any Democrat) at great risk if he keeps it up the next two years - which Obama, being Obama, will very likely do.

In fact, the one thing this election showed is that Hillary really is no shoo-in in 2016 (plus, unlike her husband, she lacks political skills and has a tendency to shoot off her mouth - e.g. she managed to lose the nomination to a completely unqualified and inexperienced lightweight, but expert politician, in 2008). And if that lightweight does what it looks like he is getting  ready to do, Hillary and the other Dem presidential hopefuls will soon start asking, "Barrack, who?" when asked about what they think about his policies and if they will continue them if they are elected.

But the links are now closed for the winter, and our guys seems to have taken a new interest in his job - especially since he and his party have frittered away the entire Congress since the 2008 elections. Now, with the Congress run entirely by Republicans, he can now, with much relief,  just do a Sarah Palin and "go rogue."  He never really wanted to deal with the brain damage and just plain old fashione sweat and hard work involved in negotiating and with Congressional Republicans, and he demonstrated that over and over again.

We will now have to put up with a very, very lame duck's childish temper tantrums for two years, but with Congress controlled by the Pubs, hopefully the damage won't be too great, and by 2016 the electorate will be saying - since you didn't get the message in 2014, this time we really mean it - enough is enough.

As this link will show, the bamster-bot media is going to great lengths of apologetics in order to run interference, to dissemble, to disassociate, to excuse and to deflect for this awful President we have.

I think there have to be many journalists right now taking stock of their professional careers, and even many young people wondering if a career in journalism really can mean journalism and not propaganda of the leftist partisans.  It is truly embarassing for CNN to stoop to such a low level as this.  The NY Times, the leftist paper of record ought to hate itself for giving up its soul for points in the election.

From the ajc's "dark side" of the force.

Neither Gruber nor bamster could have said what they mean so succinctly as gotalife, who I affectionately call, "Goat."

That's what they think, as if we needed confirmation.

the law is working better than many had ever thought it would. The uninsured rate, per Gallup, has dropped from 18.0% last year to 13.4% now. Many premiums for 2015 are lower than expected. Medicare’s finances have improved due in part to the health-care law. And as for the website, it’s working much better than it did a year ago.

“[On Saturday], we had 100,000 folks submit applications,” HHS Secretary Sylvia Burwell said on “Meet the Press” yesterday. “And there were over 500,000 people who logged in effectively yesterday as well. So I think the vast majority of people coming to the site were able to get on and do what they were intending to do.”

I must say, I am not astounded by the deflection and excuse making, but I should be, we all should be. The idea that the end justifies the means or our guy isn't as bad as your guy, or he did it too, just shows how pathetic we have become. At what point does integrity come into play. Regardless of political leanings, isn't it about time we started demanding honesty and accountability. If we excuse our leaders, will we begin to excuse ourselves. If the media doesnt need to be honest why should I. If my president can be a bully, why can't I. What really brought this to light was watching the Bngals Saints game last weekend when the fan wrestled the ball away from that girl. My thoughts are, what would a man have done? quickly followed by, why is that even a question. The right way isnt always the easiest and it is about time we got back there. I will admit I am guilty as anybody, but I promise to strive to change that.

Good post, Kyle. The good professor has given conservatives a handy tag to hang around the necks of "progressives" (a term I hestitate to use since I have yet to have someone explain to me how 70 million abortions is "progress" - unless it suggests we "move on" from dead fetuses). Indeed, the tag is a pillory of sorts.

Obama has a clear history of being dishonest and unprincipled (that is, articulating principles which he does not hold to). If someone don't know that, then he is either ignorant or deceiving himself (because I can prove it all day long - Obama being not much different from Gruber in stupidly failing to grasp the significance of video recordings). The sad thing is I think most progressives are like Obama - unprincipled and dishonest. But that is what you get perhaps when you subscribe to situtational ethics.

MarkVV

Kyle bemoans “the administration’s general, casual disregard for honesty.” It would be appropriate if he examined his own.He calls Gruber “the architect of the massive law.” This is what AP writes about Gruber:

“Few others, however, would call Gruber the architect of the massive law. He was a paid out consultant, hired to crunch numbers as the legislation was developed He was brought on board because of expertise acquired in helping Republican Gov. Mitt Romney set up a health care expansion in Massachusetts.”

(AJC, 11/15/2014)

blah blah blah
blah blah blah

@MarkVV “Few others???  You mean Queen Pelosi, Harry "The Idiot" Reid, John Kerry for starters???  They all stated Gruber as the architect.   Whether you admit it or not YOU'VE been grubered..

Almost forgot, Gruber also discussed the lies hused in creating romneycare in Mass too.  Believe it was Teddy K. that stole $500 million from the American taxpayers to support that plan.

@HeadleyLamar He sure has no common sense. Gruber seems to be exuberant in the fact that lies and deceit won the day and is recorded numerous times having said so.  He didn't think this might come back to haunt him?  As far as being honest and trustworthy, his words speak quite elaborately in that regard.

DawgDadII

The leftist pinheads think they know everything and we should bow down and worship at the altar of their superiority. Gruber and his ilk in the Democrat Party think lack of transparency is a huge political advantage. HA! It may serve a short-term purpose, but there is NO sustainable political advantage in disrespecting the voting public. Millions of people with FAR less formal education than Mr. Gruber are FAR more "intelligent", honest, and trustworthy.

When Obozo won a second time, just barely in popular vote, he called it a mandate for his policies. Why are the democrats deaf to the last vote we just had? It was way more votes than what Obozo called a mandate. Even more fun is Gruber admitting the duped the “stupid voters”, I wonder why ANYONE would support this loser administration. Maybe he was correct, right Headley?
